"This music ('Love
& Emotion') is a Sun coming out from behind a Cloud, a Ray
of Hope, and a Vision of a more human, interconnected and meaningful way
of life. Pure and Simple, that’s what it is."
"Alex Kash is a Thunderbeing. You might call him a reluctant Thunderbeing,
though at times he rejoices in the task. What does this mean, and what
bearing does it have on this music? All music is a joint effort with the
spirit world. Through conscious or unconscious effort, sometimes seemingly
with no effort at all, music is passed from the spirit realm to the physical
world. Music is part of the Arts, and all Art is created this way. Art
makes us feel. During and after experiencing Art, we feel uplifted or
depressed, happy or sad, comforted or alienated, or a strange mix of feelings,
but we are moved to feel.
Thunderbeings come to life for change, enormous change. Its not an easy
life, or a dull one. Sort of like a roller coaster ride through heaven
and hell. In walking along the road towards consciousness though, one
chooses what to write about, what to leave behind as a marker along the
path.
This particular collection of songs, called ‘Love
& Emotion’, is self-explanatory once you have heard it
several times. Until then, it’s impossible to describe. We try,
with monikers like ‘Americana’, ‘Shamanic’, and
‘Acoustic’, but its deeper, wider, and certainly more colorful
than these words can convey. You simply must Hear and Feel it first. There
is good medicine in all of these songs. Its worth your money spent on
it, and your time listening through headphones in a darkened room with
no distractions, as all great music is. " |

REVIEW OF 'ORGANIC
ALCHEMY' BY HEIDI FOSNER OF VICTORY
NEWS
"Good is a bad word to use in describing anything. It’s too
general. But Organic Alchemy was conceived in goodness. To paraphrase
the words of its creators, Alex Kash and Bethany Dalton-Kash, this music
comes from love to promote healing. Good intentions don’t necessarily
make for good music, but Kash’s versatile vocals and 12 string guitar
playing do. They are terrific and keep the power of love theme from becoming
monotonous. There is no gloom and doom here, but there is a lot of interesting
and varied music. “Easy To Love,” made me think of George
Thoroughgood. “Magical Thing,” brought back memories of Kenny
Loggins and “Comfort Zone,” co- written by Dalton-Kash, had
me thinking of Barry White – stylistically, not vocally. Dalton-
Kash also co-wrote “Organic Alchemy” and “Everything
Is One.” “Cool Seven,” well, it’s cool! Organic
Alchemy is an enjoyable life and love affirming CD. Kash’s many
years of experience playing with different bands, and his 10 years as
a solo performer, add up to some very worthy stuff. Organic Alchemy is
as good for you as tofu served by an experienced cook who knows how to
spice it up. Kash has recorded 6 CDs to date. You can check out his website
at www.alexkash.com". (Heidi Fosner) |

Alex Kash—Organic Alchemy, 2006, Emotive Music
"As is usual for Kash, it’s just him, a 12-string guitar and
a bunch of nicely written, generally positive songs in a variety of styles.
Kash’s voice is pleasing in a James Taylor-ish way and his guitar
work is excellent, establishing moods without being flashy. (Come to think
of it, that’s James Taylorish too!)". |

How can Alex keep surprising me in so many ways??? Very EASILY > in
15 or less songs on a new CD. His vocal quality changes to fit the mood
of each song. His guitar playing always compliments his singing but often
is as deep and meaningful as the words of the song. With this CD, it is
very apparent that Alex keeps stretching outward to experiment and to
find new avenues for his music while he goes deeper inward to find both
his essence and that of his music that talks to and for him ...and anyone
who listens.

REVIEW OF FLORIDA
HEAT BY SONYA ELIJAH OF MODERNSKIRTS.COM
Alex Kash delivers a little taste of heaven with his acoustic CD Florida
Heat. The lead-off track begins with a weird harmonica riff but is soon
followed with a nice acoustic groove and some cool lyrics. With the vivid
imagery in the self-titled single, Kash puts you directly in the glare
of the Sunshine State.
“Kickin’ Back on Borrowed Time” is a fun, upbeat song
with a rocking acoustic feel that almost puts you in the mind of “My
Boogie Shoes.” In this song Kash sings “my mind’s in
my computer/my job is on the line/but I’m just kickin’/back
on borrowed time.” Other songs are just good, clean fun songs. “Just
a Little Bit of Soul” has a nice acoustic groove. It would be remiss
for Kash, living in Florida, not to have any songs dealing with hurricanes.
Sure enough, Florida’s pride and plague gets a shout-out in “Hurricane
Storm.”
“Unwinding” once again showcases Kash’s uncanny knack
for storytelling, though the vocals are a little too loud for their own
good. Finally, on “Where the Light Shines,” we actually get
some harmony, which sounds refreshing and quite nice. You can tell Kash
sure loves his home-state when he sings “Let go of the darkness
and let the light of Florida come in.” “It’s Hot”
is a clear stand-out song on Florida Heat. This acoustic soul/blues hybrid
is hilarious yet soulful at the same time. He has a little fun with lyrics
like “How much perseverance have you got / The heat on a hot, sunny
day.” On “Love Lives Here,” Kash remembers a lost love
and the emotion is tangible as he sings “There’s something
‘bout her eyes.” The harmony in this song is lower than the
melody, which makes the quietly sensitive tune even more disarming. Though
some of the transitions on Florida Heat could have been developed with
more well thought out progressions, Kash’s album is a strong collection
of straightforward acoustic guitar rock with engaging lyrics that tell
vivid and sweetly emotional stories. (Self-Released)

REVIEW OF 'FLORIDA HEAT' BY C.
NATHAN COYLE OF RAMBLES.NET
When Alex Kash moved to southern Florida, he was asked over and over again
what his impressions were of the area. As the ultimate answer to that
question, Kash created this compilation ablum, Florida Heat.
The term "compilation" takes on a stylistic meaning as well,
as his songs are reminiscent of popular singer-songwriters. The harmonica
and musical pace of "The Real You" has a bit of a Billy Joel
feel (think of a South Florida "Piano Man"). The mellow pace
of the title track, "Florida Heat," has a mellow mood and vocal
pacing not unlike a James Taylor piece. The easygoing ballad "Gone
Fishin'" could easily be mistaken by some parrotheads as a Jimmy
Buffet tune. Kash also adds some regional cultural seasoning to some of
the songs, notably the Calypso folk taste to "Mango Season."
While the style of Kash's music has familiar and comfortable elements,
the method of music-making is rather intriguing. Kash employs a tricky
form of veiled simplicity in his music. Outside of two songs using additional
vocals, the bulk of the album contains just Kash using his voice (no overdubs),
a 12-string acoustic guitar and an occasional harmonica. Until reading
that in the CD jacket notes, it wasn't an easily discernable situation.
(Think of it as a musical form of those 3-D puzzles that were popular
a decade or so ago. Once you know what to look for, it becomes obvious
thereafter.) Kash does a wonderful presentation that seems to be multi-faceted
when in reality he's using an intentionally limited musical palette.
Kash's vocal approach is particularly peculiar, because at times he doesn't
stay in a comfortable, manageable range. Especially evident in "Love
Lives There" and "Only Tonight," Kash pushes the upper
limits of his vocal range, to the point that he sounds like he's straining/struggling
to hit the notes. It's not an unsettling experience, though, because the
straining effect actually accentuates the songs' inherent emotional meaning/intent.
Whether this effect is intentional or not, it's perfectly suited to the
mood of those songs.
And although some songs take on a more noticeable influence, that's not
to say that Kash doesn't have his own style. There are plenty of songs
that highlight Kash's versatility in approach and performance. "Hurricane
Storm" takes a more frantic pace compared to "Just a Little
Bit of Soul" and "Kicking Back on Borrowed Time," which
showcase Kash's more mellow blues edge. "Where the Light Shines"
and "Unwinding" have a light rock feel that showcase Kash's
complete package of talented sound.
Actually, one could make that claim to the entirety Florida Heat; is is
just that: a complete package of talented sound. So, kick back and take
a mental trip to southern Florida with Alex Kash. (Plus, you can experience
the Florida Heat without that awful humidity.)

REVIEW OF 'FLORIDA
HEAT' FROM MUSIC MATTERS REVIEW (MMREVIEW.COM)
Florida Heat is an album of voice and 12-string guitar with an occasional
blast of harmonica. Alex Kash’s voice sounds a bit like James Taylor
when he is singing softly and his guitar is capable of laying down a wide
range of rhythms and moods. The songs are interesting and everything is
done with the understated taste of a man who has spent a long time in
the music business, working in various capacities on other people’s
projects. A pleasant sound with much to appreciate when you listen a few
times. —Michael Devlin |
REVIEW OF FLORIDA
HEAT FROM TOM PETERSEN OF VICTORY
NEWS
Emotive Music Alex Kash is kind of the Hal Blaine of vocals, having backed
up or ghosted, well, everybody who has cut a record in the last 25 years!
Claim is that he’s done more voice overs and narrations for commercials,
short films, and spoken word recordings than any active musician, too.
In his spare time, he’s been playing his own material for years,
and now and then gets a record out under his own name. Happily, Kash is
a fine songwriter with plenty of personality of his own to bring to his
own projects, avoiding the trouble that often plagues session players
who go solo – that they don’t have many original ideas. Not
that Kash goes belting off into uncharted territory: in fact, most of
Florida Heat has a safe familiarity to it. This is mostly because Kash
can, and does, sound like all the lead singers he’s backed (or propped
up!) over the years. This is one of the delights of the record, though,
especially for people raised on ‘70s radio or younger folks looking
for that vibe. Each tune on Florida Heat either evokes some classic genre,
or emerges as an inventive mix of well known signatures. BTO sings Badfinger,
unplugged! The New Riders play Journey! What if James Taylor joined The
Cars?! Kash personally promotes inner peace, and his songs (all originals,
here) follow Woody Guthrie’s dictum to sing about things that make
you take pride in yourself, not run yourself down. It adds up to a fun,
satisfying record, showing that Kash is deserving of a wide, popular audience.

REVIEW OF "MY VOICES"
BY NICHOLAS COLE:
"Mellow music with great timing and provocative lyrics. Combine excellent
timing with a gentle, mellow sound and you have the parameters of 'My

can control your fascination with the music, listen well to the words.
It's worth it." |
REVIEW OF "MY VOICES",
BY PHILLIP JOYCE:
"The simple review of this album is that it is not normal. Anywhere
you are expecting to make comparisons, you will fail, because the music
only truly defines itself, and nothing else. So, I won't bother trying
to make comparisons here, but, I will tell you that you will hear some
extraodinary vocals on this CD from a person who is clearly adept in the
recording studio. There is a lengthy song called, "Thunderbeing"
in which he even attempts the call of a raven, and extraodinary background
vocals that make you swear he has hired Motown or Jamaican artists, when
in fact, it is himself. You will be delighted to listen to this CD over
and over, only to realize you hear something new each time. It may be
one of your most listened to CDs." |
REVIEW OF 'TORE IT APART'
BY MATTHEW HURST AKA DJBOX
"According to Alex Kash's website, Mr. Kash has had experience in
the music industry for at least 30 years, and has worked with artists
such as Journey and Pat Travers (both of whom he has written songs for,
apparently). The experience shows in his own work, specifically his song
entitled "Tore It Apart". This song is a throwback to Rhythm
and Blues in the traditional sense, back to the soulful roots lost somewhere
after the 1970s. This track completely encompasses that sound, from the
soulful Hammond Organ, to the bittersweet piano, to the kind of rusty
acoustic drums seemingly lost years ago. Perhaps most impressive is the
artist's vocal talents, varying in range with the kind of mourning soul
voice rivaling the greats of the genre. Additionally, Kash crafts his
recording technically around the sound of the era - and for better or
worse that means the song will not have CD quality range, but should sound
like a mint condition record... If you enjoy the kind of acoustic soul
reminiscent of an era gone by (and gone by all too soon as this song reminds
me), by all means download this song. Otherwise, if you are a bit curious
about old-school soul in a neo-soul world, give it a shot. Alex Kash is
an amazing and experienced producer and indeed an artist as well..." |

REVIEW OF 'FLORIDA HEAT'
by PETER MASSEY, GREEN
MAN REVIEW Alex Kash, Florida Heat (Self released, 2005)Inside
the cover of the album is a note from Alex Kash that reads: "When
I first arrived in South Florida, in interviews and conversation, people
always asked me what my impressions of Florida were. This compilation
album of 13 songs is my way of answering that question." Alex sings
in a very expressive, almost pop style with a smooth, laid-back feel,
with just Kash singing the 13 songs he has written, accompanied strumming
on his acoustic 12-string guitar and mouth organ. He put me in mind of
Labie Sifrie, and José Feliciano, so if you are a fan of these,
you might want to lend an ear to Alex Kash.
His guitar takes on the percussive style often adopted by contemporary
performers of this type of songs. Although he sings with just his guitar
for accompaniment, he is no Bob Dylan or perhaps what some might accept
as a "true" folk singer. Indeed, I don't think Alex pretends
to be one. His songs take on a reggae, jazz, blues and pop feel. With
titles such as 'Unwinding', 'Kicking Back on Borrowed Time', 'Mango Season',
'Gone Fishing', 'It's Hot', and 'Florida Heat', from which the album takes
its title, I think you will get an idea of what Alex is all about. He
takes his influence from the background of a band session musician, with
a pedigree of recordings, including five albums in his own right.
Singer songwriters often suffer from the 'I want to be heard' syndrome
and many fall into the vanity recording trap. Often they don't put enough
thought into the song, or its content, or to whom it is going to appeal.
As artists, they lay their innermost soul bare for the rest of the world
to see. Too often these days they are left to provide just lounge lizard
background music in restaurants and bars where no one listens to them
-- which is a pity.
So if you are in the mood for an album of some good quality easy listening
Florida soul-searching music, then this one is for you. |
